Kaolin raw ore generally contains clay minerals and non clay minerals. Clay minerals are mainly kaolinite group minerals, followed by hydromica, montmorillonite and chlorite. The non clay minerals are mainly quartz, feldspar and mica, as well as aluminum oxide and organic matter (plant fiber, organic peat and coal).

 

Calcination is one of the important processing technologies of kaolin. The calcined kaolin is used to remove structural water or crystal water, carbon and other volatile substances and become metakaolinite, which is called calcined kaolin. Calcined kaolin has the characteristics of high whiteness, small capacity, large specific surface area and pore volume, good oil absorption, covering and wear resistance, high insulation and thermal stability.

The difference of Calcined Kaolin with Washed Kaolin

Firstly, calcination of kaolin involves chemical changes in its crystal structure and original soil during calcination, while washing kaolin with water only results in physical changes and does not alter the properties of the original soil;

Secondly, the whiteness of calcined kaolin is relatively high, while the whiteness of washed kaolin does not significantly increase, resulting in a significant difference;

The third type of calcined kaolin mainly refers to hard kaolin. The original soil has no cohesiveness and cannot be directly used as a raw material for papermaking or refractory materials. It needs to be calcined and used. However, the original soil of washed kaolin has cohesiveness and can be directly used as a binder for refractory materials or paper fillers. In general, Baidu is better for calcining kaolin and can be used in the papermaking industry, but the corresponding cost is also relatively high.

Applications

1) Paper- making Industry: It is mainly applied in the coating paper, art paper, white board paper, corrugated paper, coating
white board paper; Cast coated paper and so on . It is more applicable in gravure printing for its good loose depth and elasticity which can guarantee less leaks and spots.

2) Coating Industry : Its whiteness, smoothness and non- transparency can be well improved by adding Kaolin to the pigment in the process of coating paper and paper board.

3) Oil and Paint Industry :It can well improve the viscosity, fluidity, anti-precipitation and so on. The enamel glaze slip'
properties of floatation, viscosity, adherence and thermal casting resistance can be well improved by adding Kaolin because it can make the cast enamel more adhesive to iron billet. Kaolin also plays the role of anti-precipitating when used in water paint. It is also a kind of good inorganic latex agent.

4) Rubber Industry : In the production of cable rubber and plastics, kaolin can improve the abrasiveness, hardness, anti-shock and extension rate.

5) Plastic Industry : It plays the role of reinforcement with its good dispersion. It also can stop the infrared rays of wavelength from 7-14um in thick film so as to increase the temperature in the shed.
