Biotite mica

The chemical composition of biotite is K (Mg, Fe2+) 3 (Al, Fe3+) Si3O10 (OH, F) 2, which is widely replaced by isomorphism. Therefore, the chemical composition of biotite produced in different rocks varies greatly. The biotite in general acidic and alkaline magmatic rocks has high FeO and low MgO; The biotite in basic and ultrabasic rocks has high MgO and low FeO; In alkaline pegmatite, biotite has lower MgO and relatively higher Fe2O3.

Black mica is widely used in the building materials industry, fire protection industry, fire extinguishing agents, welding rods, plastics, electrical insulation, papermaking, asphalt paper, rubber, pearl pigments and other chemical industries. Ultra fine mica powder can be used as functional filler for plastics, coatings, paints, rubber, etc., to improve its mechanical strength, enhance its toughness, adhesion, anti-aging and corrosion resistance. In addition to having extremely high electrical insulation, resistance to acid and alkali corrosion, elasticity, toughness and sliding, heat and sound insulation, and low coefficient of thermal expansion, it has also taken the lead in introducing characteristics such as smooth surface, large diameter to thickness ratio, regular shape, and strong adhesion of the second surface of the sheet.

The crystal morphology of biotite is the same as that of phlogopite. The color is black, dark brown, sometimes with light red, light green, or other tones. Those with high titanium content appear light reddish brown, while those with high valence iron appear green. Transparent to opaque. Glass luster, black has a semi metallic luster. Hardness 2-3, specific gravity 3.02-3.12. Biotite can be altered into other minerals such as chlorite, muscovite, and sericite by the action of hot water solutions. Due to its high iron content and poor insulation performance, biotite is far inferior to muscovite. Black cloud mother flakes are commonly used as building material fillers. Black mica with larger particle size is easily distinguished based on its sheet-like morphology, darker color, and elasticity, as well as its complete cleavage like mica and slightly magnetic properties when heated. In both plutonic and shallow rocks, especially acidic or slightly alkaline rocks, black mica is mostly present.
